Good Work of Ministry

Isaiah tells us that one day God will send His Servant, who will be anointed by the Holy Spirit to do the “Good Work” of proclaiming the Good News by which a new people will be created. This new people, created by the Work of this Servant, Isaiah continues, will “be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord for the display of his glory.” In Luke 4, Jesus tells us that He himself is this Servant. And those who are made alive in Jesus Christ are the new creation of God, Isaiah’s “oaks of righteousness … for the display of his glory” among the nations.

Paul then tells us that “by grace we have been saved through faith. And this is not our own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast; but we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”

Why? Peter points us to the answer: “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. … [Therefore,] keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good works and glorify God on the day of visitation.” (I Peter 2:9,12)

What are these “good works”? None other than the “good work” of shepherding men, women, and children in the Way of God’s perfect righteousness, even the Way of Jesus Christ, “teaching them to observe all that [Jesus has] commanded.”

Therefore, we believe that in and through and for Jesus Christ, God has set the Chattanooga Valley PCA congregation of his people in Flintstone, Georgia as “oaks of righteousness” and has prepared for the “good work” (Eph 2:10) of worship, prayer, teaching and training, fellowship, and the proclamation of God good news through “good word-deeds” by which to display the glorious, life-giving reality of His gospel, the news of God’s good, perfect, restoring reign in Jesus Christ, among a people in need of forgiveness, restgoration, and hope.
